The transition period for implementing the standards is almost at an end, here is a summary of the standards as set out by the ICO with the expectation that organisations should conform by 2nd September 2021.

Most people recognise the need to protect  children while they are online.  These standards set out the framework of how to do this effectively and affects information society services (ISS) likely to be accessed by children. Time will tell how effective it will really be.

Impact on business  - this will affect many Apps, Programs, connected toys and devices,  it will include search engines , social media platforms, streaming services, online gaming, news or educational websites and websites that offer goods and services to users over the internet.  It will not affect public authorities unless they provide commercial services to children.

  • Best interests of the child
  • Data protection impact assessments

  • Transparency
  • Detrimental use of data
  • Policies and community standards
